Intertrust Provides Microsoft PlayReady and Marlin DRM Interoperability on its ExpressPlay Cloud

Paris, October 8, 2014 – Trusted distributed computing pioneer Intertrust Technologies Corporation today announced that it has expanded its ExpressPlay™ cloud DRM service to support Microsoft’s PlayReady® DRM.  This enhancement extends ExpressPlay’s reach across all open-standards based Marlin DRM devices as well as PlayReady-enabled devices such as the Xbox and the Silverlight browser plugin.

“We are pleased to introduce a second major DRM technology to our ExpressPlay cloud service,” said Ani Joshi, General Manager of Intertrust’s Trust Services Group. “The need to support multiple DRM systems has become increasingly critical to service providers and device makers.  While we still believe that open standards are the most cost effective and future proof solutions for the market, service providers should not be handcuffed by technology choices of others. We are committed to supporting new DRMs in ExpressPlay as they become popular.”

The DRM market has changed dramatically over the years, and with the advent of cloud services that allow interoperability without needing to resort to burdensome bilateral agreements or a commitment to a single DRM, adopters can hedge against market uncertainties.  While a Marlin-only installation remains the most economical and future proof DRM option for content services and devices, the new ExpressPlay offering supports those who have opted to use PlayReady in order to target Microsoft platforms.

Marlin is an open, standards-based technology. Anyone can download the specifications for free at: www.marlin-community.com, and any company can contribute to Marlin’s development by joining the standards body that developed it. Marlin’s open specification immunizes those implementing the technology against corporate reorganizations and direction changes by proprietary developers.
