Internet Initiative Japan Inc. Launches Video Service with Intertrust’s ExpressPlay

New service gives Japanese audiences access to premium content

Tokyo and Sunnyvale, CA, January 26, 2015 — Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774) has announced the deployment of its IIJ Video Service using Intertrust’s ExpressPlay™ content protection solution based on the open Marlin DRM standard.

The ExpressPlay cloud DRM system is a comprehensive solution that implements Marlin technology specifications. It is developed by Intertrust, a Silicon Valley-based R&D company that provides technologies for trusted computing, personal data protection, and big data, and is a co-founder of the Marlin DRM standard. ExpressPlay has wideglobal adoption and is rapidly growing as the content protection system chosen by national IPTV initiatives and OTT service providers.

IIJ’s service will use the IIJ GIO Cloud Transcode Package to convert large amounts of content in the cloud.  By using ExpressPlay, content can be protected at the point of conversion, which lowers costs and improves the quality of the content delivered.

“We chose ExpressPlay because it was developed by Intertrust, the global leader in DRM and trusted computing technologies,” said Bunji Yamamoto at IIJ. “ExpressPlay’s use of Marlin DRM has a proven track record in Japan when it was selected by the Japan IPTV Forum in 2008 and deployed to every connected TV and set top box in our country. By licensing ExpressPlay, we will continue to offer secure, premium content pleasing both content distribution companies and our customers.”

“IIJ has been a leader in the Internet business in Japan since the early 1990s with a reputation for delivering the latest technologies to Japanese consumers,” said Gilles Boccon-Gibod, Senior VP Technology and Chief Architect at Intertrust. “The combination of IIJ’s technology and infrastructure and ExpressPlay’s robust content protection will deliver a complete and easy-to-deploy media distrubtion solution across multiple platforms.”

The Marlin DRM standard was designed to meet Hollywood studios’ requirements for protecting premium content.  In addition to Marlin DRM, ExpressPlay DRM service also supports Microsoft PlayReady® functionality in an effort to offer flexibility to providers as they work to secure content.
